Congressman Tom Petri, who heads the Congressional Humanities Caucus, joined students for breakfast before the second day of the Future of the Humanities and the Liberal Arts in 21st Century Higher Education conference co-sponsored by La Pietra Dialogues and the John Brademas Center for the Study of Congress at New York University. Congressman Petri was extremely generous in sharing his experience and insight into the day to day life of a member of Congress.
Students were interested to know how Congress viewed funding for humanities and liberal arts programs and also to hear the Congressman´s views on why supporting the humanities and liberal arts is essential to educating responsible democratic citizens of tomorrow. The Congressman also shared his experience as a student travelling abroad and related how important those experiences were to making him who he is today.
