LEFT COALITION:

• Democratic Party – PARTITO DEMOCRATICO (PD)

Party Leader: Pierluigi Bersani (Party’s Secretary)

The PD is a social-democratic party, founded in 2007 as a merger of various left wing and centrist parties, among whom the Democrats of the Left , who were the heirs of the Italian Communist Party, and the Christian Leftists, who were the heirs of the heirs of Christian democracy party’s left. Bersani has been the party’s leader since 2009 leadership elections.

Bersani is also the PD’s candidate for the premiership after having succeeded in the PD primaries elections held on November 25, 2012.

• Left Ecology Freedom – SINISTRA ECOLOGIA E LIBERTA’ (SEL)

Party Leader: Nichi Vendola

SEL is a socialist party, originally founded as a left-wing coalition of parties founded in 2010.

Nichi Vendola, the party’s leader, is also the current President of Region Apulia

Italy. Common Good – ITALIA. BENE COMUNE is the Italian centre-left political and electoral alliance founded on October 13, 2012, expressly created to stand the 2013 Italian general election.

Besides PD and SEl, the coalition comprises also the Italian Socialist Party, Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI), and the Democratic Centre, Centro Democratico (CD).

RIGHT COALITION:

• The People of Freedom – IL POPOLO DELLA LIBERTA’ (PDL)

Party Leader: Silvio Berlusconi (note: Berlusconi is the Party’s President, while Angelino Alfano is the Party’s Secretary; the Party’s leadership should be in the hands of the Secretary, but actually Berlusconi is the acknowledged leader)

The PDL is a centre-right party, founded in 2009, and is one of the two major parties of the current Italian party system - the other one is the PD. The party is home to a wide range of factions, groups and associate parties, whose ideology range from social democracy to national conservatism.

• North League – LEGA NORD (LN)

Party Leader: Roberto Maroni (Federal Secretary)

Lega Nord is a federalist and regionalist party founded in 1991 by Umberto Bossi, that is the Federal President.

The party’s ideology is a merger of political federalism, fiscal federalism, regionalism and defense of northern traditions, and it also takes a tough stance on crime, immigration, especially from the Muslim countries, and terrorism.

Lega Nord party members have taken part to all Berlusconi’s cabinet.

People of Freedom. Berlusconi President – POPOLO DELLA LIBERTA’. BERLUSCONI PRESIDENTE. Recently Berlusconi and Maroni announced that their party will run together in the next general elections: the leader of the coalition will be Silvio Berlusconi, while the two parties still have to find an agreement on who will be the candidate premier.

MODERATES COALITION:

• Union of Centre – UNIONE DI CENTRO (UDC)

Party Leader: Pier Ferdinando Casini

UDC is a mainly Christian Democratic coalition of parties whose main component is the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats.

The party was founded in 2008.

• Future and Freedom – FUTURO E LIBERTA’ (FLI)

Party Leader: Gianfranco Fini

FLI is a centre-right party, founded in 2010 as a split from the People of Freedom. The party’s leader, Gianfranco Fini, is the current President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies.

• Civic Choice – SCELTA CIVICA CON MONTI PER L’ITALIA (SC)

Leader: Mario Monti (Current Italian Prime Minister)

SC is a centrist electoral list formed for the 2013 general election to support he outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti. SC includes Toward the Third Republic, and new centrist political party, some ministers from Monti’s technocratic government, dissidents both from the People of freedom and the Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and other minor groups.

With Monti for Italy – CON MONTI PER L’ITALIA is the centrist coalition formed for the 2013 Italian general elections. It’s platform is based on Monti’s manifesto titled “Change Italy. Reform Europe”.

OTHER POLITICAL PARTIES:

• Five Star Movement – MOVIMENTO 5 STELLE (M5S)

Leader: Beppe Grillo

M5S is a popultis, ecologist, partially Eurosceptic and anti-systemic party. The party was founded in 2009 by Beppe Grillo, a popural Italian comedian and blogger.

• Civil Revolution – RIVOLUZIONE CIVILE (RC)

Leader: Antonio Ingroia

RC is a left wing electoral list of political parties, including Antonio Di Pietro’s Italia dei Valori (Italy of Values, IdV), Luigi de Magistris’ Movimento Arancione (Orange Movement, MA), Communist Refoundation Party and Federatio of the Greens. The list was launched on December 2012.

• Do to Stop the Decline FARE PER FERMARE IL DECLINO (FiD)

Leader: Oscar Giannino

FiD is a liberal-libertarian political association. The association was founded in July 2012 by group of seven economists: Oscar Giannino, Michele Boldrin, Sandro Brusco, Alessandro De Nicola, Andrea Moro, Carlo Stagnaro, Luigi Zingales.
