As photographers most of us at some point will shoot something personal: about our family, or our parents, or our children. But how do we do it so it’s honest, unabashed, and open? How do we make work that’s truthful, that reveals our very core? For the last 9 years, my work has turned inwards to family. Through ‘Days with My Father’, ‘The Reluctant Father’, and other projects, I’ve learned how to have a dialogue with myself, to use photography as a means of making sense of the incomprehensible. Over two days, students will show projects they are working on, and we’ll take them apart. We’ll try and understand what’s being said; what’s being left out. Together, the class will figure out how to make them true, how to make them powerful. Personal work only works when you become unafraid.
