On the day of Adolf Hitler’s 1938 state visit to Rome during the Second World War, a young gay man, Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni), and housewife Antonietta (Sophia Loren), are brought together in an unusual encounter that sheds light on what it meant to be homosexual in fascist Italy. Italian film scholar Mauro Giori will discuss the contribution of film to the discussion of LGBTQ+ issues during the early years of the formation of Italy’s LGBTQ+ movement following a special screening of the internationally renowned classic A Special Day / Una giornata particolare by Italian Director Ettore Scola, nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1978.
