International changes over the past decade have placed human rights, fundamental freedoms, democratisation and rule of law at the centre of international relations. This humanitarian and political impetus, which is inspired by a strong sense of idealism, arises from an awareness that the violation of human rights is one of the main causes of conflict and instability throughout the world. The Interministerial Committee for Human Rights in Italy´s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, chaired by Mr. Diego Brasioli, is composed of representatives of the main ministries involved in promoting human rights in Italy. The Committee engages in conflict prevention, the promotion of human rights in countries where the most serious and systematic violations take place and also oversees Italy´s compliance with obligations set forth in international agreements. Mr. Brasioli will speak about the work of the Committee and some of the main challenges he sees around the world.
