Jason King is currently an associate professor and academic director of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

“Jason King is a cultural critic & journalist, musician (performer, vocal arranger, producer, musical supervisor), manager, strategist & consultant to artists and labels, and live event producer. Founding full-time faculty member of the department; served as interim chair in 2002; and associate chair from 2003-2006, and Artistic Director from 2006-2012. He teaches classes on: record producing, music entrepreneurship, branding, rock music, hip-hop, r&b, soul, jazz, Asian American and African American culture.
Research interests: music, cinema, popular culture, identity, globalization, 20th and 21st century geopolitics. Affiliated faculty, NYU Abu Dhabi. Has written many essays on pop music in books, anthologies and journals; contributing writer for magazines/newspapers like Vibe, Blender, The Village Voice, The Los Angeles Times, Slate, The Root, Idolator.com. His blog entry “Michael Jackson: An Appreciation of His Talent” was chosen for the Da Capo Press Best Music Writing 2010 compilation, edited by Ann Powers. Liner notes include: a Luther Vandross compilation for Sony Music and the 2012 vinyl exclusive reissue of D’Angelo’s Voodoo for Light in the Attic. He appears as a talking head and cultural critic in many music documentaries, including Glamourpuss, a 2010 Lady Gaga doc, upcoming documentaries on Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, and Spike Lee’s 2012 Michael Jackson documentary Bad 25. Recent public interviews have included Nick Jonas for Social Media Week NY 2011, and Harry Belafonte for Apple’s 2012 Meet the Musician Series. Work in theatre includes “The Story of My Father” (book, music and lyrics) at The Crossroads Theater Company; “The Day Eazy-E Died” (director, sound designer) starring Anthony Mackie at the New Perspectives Theater Company, and marketing consultant/ambassador on the 2002 Tony Award winning Broadway production of Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam. Pioneering approach to teaching hip-hop in the classroom has been profiled on MTV, BET, and AOL and he has been invited to give lectures on popular music at universities like Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, and MIT. In the Middle East, he has pioneered innovative classes on global music making and transcultural approaches to recording and producing with software.
