Zulkiflee Anwar Haque, better known as Zunar, was born on May 15, 1962 at Bukit Junun, Gurun, Kedah and is known for his biting humor and satirical critique of Malaysian politics. Zunar often likes to bring along a pen and notebook during his drawing excursions, where he records ideas from all walks of life and translates them into caricatures or cartoons. He has been subject to raids, arrests and harassment under Malaysia’s increasingly strict censorship laws. He is currently facing up to 43 years in prison for the publication of a series of cartoons that the government alleges ‘violate’ Malaysia’s Sedition Act.
Zunar has received numerous awards for his work including the Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award from the Cartoonists’ Rights Network, the Hullman/Hammett Award from Human Rights Watch and the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. He was also a secretary to the Association of Selangor and Federal Territory cartoonists. Quite often he held workshops for individuals wanting to venture into cartoon business.
